Czech-Germans from Karlovy Vary region in the British Royal Air Force

Thesis deals with the so far neglected topic of German speaking members of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War, who came from the territory of today's Karlovy Vary region. In the first chapter, attention is focused to the topic in the general context - Czechoslovak citizens of German nationality who fought for the liberation of Czechoslovakia in the Czech army, i.e. in the Air force. Few selected stories of RAF members from the Karlovy Vary Region are presented. In addition to the military services themselves, the author deals with the motivation for joining the resistance and the fate of the families of all these soldiers during the Second World War. Author is also placed on their fates after 1945 and general context of their life stories. The role of protein kinase C alpha in individual cancer cell invasiveness

Protein kinase C alpha was one of the first identified isoenzyme of PKC family. Since then PKC has been shown to be important in various signal cascades. One of the best known role is in tumor invasiveness and in development of metastases. A role of protein kinase C alpha was pointed out in regulation of Rho/ROCK pathway in amoeboid invasiveness and also Raf/MAPK signaling cascade of mesenchymal movement. ERM proteins, which act in cancer invasiveness, are regulated by protein kinase C too.

First Generation of RAF in Selected Media

Bachelor thesis "First Generation of RAF in Selected Media" focuses on the doings of the first generation of the terrorist group Red Army Fraction in years 1970-77 a its reflection in the Czechoslovakian press. First part pays attention to historical development of German society in 60's and to the student movement of 1968. One whole chapter is than dedicated to biography of the first generation leaders. Following part describes then the activities of Red Army Fraction from its start until the death of the first generation members in Stammheim. Briefly will be also mentioned in this chapter the second and third generation of RAF and its final seize of activities. Final part analyses the level of information about activities of first generation in Czechoslovakia, in particular in daily journals "Rude pravo" and "Prace". Further will be also discussed the development of Czech press since 1948 and its evaluation.

The role of ERK1 and ERK2 protein kinases in the MAPK/ERK signaling

The MAPK/ERK cascade is highly conserved signalling pathway regulating cellular processes which are necessary for cell life, such as proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis or cell migration. All these cellular responses are the result of the processing of extracellular signals through three-tier ERK cascade consisting of protein kinases Raf, MEK and ERK. The signal is transmitted by sequential phosphorylation where RAF phosphorylates MEK and MEK phosphorylates and activates ERK. Protein kinase ERK then phosphorylates and regulates a wide range of substrates at different locations in the cell. This affects the cellular response to the extracellular signal. Regulation of this pathway on every level is very important and is modulated by interaction partners and adaptor proteins. Deregulation of the pathway as well as mutations of individual protein kinases can lead to severe pathological consequences. At the level of ERK, there are two isoforms, ERK1 and ERK2, which are more than 80 % identical at the amino acid level. Italian and German Left-Wing Terrorism in the 1970s in a Transnational Perspective

The dissertation thesis concerns with the issue of the left-wing terrorism in Italy and Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s. The chosen topic is approached using the methods of transnational studies, which have been thus far applied only exceptionally in the relation to this phenomenon, despite the numerous parallels in different countries. The focus of the research lies in the analysis of the German-Italian terrorist network as a whole, the contacts between the organizations and mutual influence. The direct and indirect comparison of the cooperating terrorist organizations is also a substantial part of the thesis. The protest movement, which spread at the end of the 1960s and from which emerged the future terrorist groups as its most radical branches, was an important transnational phenomenon itself. The first chapter concerns with the analysis of this movement, emphasizing the reasons of its inception and its stances on political violence. The student and worker aspects of the movement are introduced, as well as older roots in the anti-fascist resistance or in the work of the Marxist authors. The Impact of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on RAF

The terrorist group Red Army Fraction ("RAF"), which jeopardized the public security with their attacks in West Germany since the seventies and killed more than three thousand people, issued a statement of official closure on April 20, 1998 after 28 years of its activity. This thesis tries to answer the question whether the fall of the Berlin Wall brought the final dissolution of the group. In addition to geopolitical changes it is also necessary to take into account the instruments of the national security policy and the split of opinion within the group. The geopolitical reversal in 1989 had two negative impacts on the RAF. Firstly it meant a devastating ideological defeat for them, even though the former GDR or any other Eastern Bloc country did not respond fully to their expectations. Another shock for them was the arrest of ten former RAF-members who were hiding in the GDR under a false identity. They eventually filed an extensive testimony, so that their sentences could be commuted. Federal Republic of Germany, which had not been too successful in the fight against terrorism up to this time, used the internal weakness of the RAF caused by political circumstances and it finally introduced new instruments to further destabilize the group and led to a rift between prisoners and members at large....

Britain at Bay: The British Defence Policy between the World Wars

The purpose of the thesis "Britain at Bay: British Defence Policy between the World Wars" is to analyse the creation and application of defence policy of Great Britain and its Empire in the interwar period. The author tries to assess and interpret actions of individual government actors as well as actors outside the government. He argues that defence policy promoted by politicians, soldiers, and bureaucrats, was not always a mere result of rational reasoning. There were often cases of defending particular interests, decision-making influenced by emotions and misleading perception of the external world. One of the strongest limitations was Britain's economic frailty which influenced the British grand strategy in eminent and key way during the examined period. It is well demonstrated on the shift from almost unilateral disarmament after the First World War to the immense armament just a few months before the Second World War. Great emphasis is also put on individual armed branches which bore the main burden of Britain's and Imperial security. Therefore, it was important to pursue the internal development of the Army, Air Force and the Navy and their operational plans in which they had to deal with gradual emergence of three enemy powers at three different parts of the world.
